Six Patroons scored in double figures in Coach Brown’s professional debut
ALBANY, NY - March 4th, 2022 –The Albany Patroons returned to the court after two years for a well-attended season opener at the Washington Avenue Armory in front of a crowd of 1,648. The Albany Patroons dominated the Massachusetts Monarchs with a 134-99 victory.
Ja’Quan Newton, a 6’3 combo guard from Miami (FL), scored the Patroons’ first three points of the season. Jared Sam, a 6’10 power forward who has played in the NBA G League, followed that with an 8-point run of his own. Albany took the first quarter, 37-25, with former Alcorn State 6’3” combo guard A.J. Mosby was the night’s lead scorer with 39 points.
“It was just hard work that got it,” said Mosby of his 39-point night. “It was just having confidence in my shots; when I have confidence on my side and I see the ball, it’s my night, so that’s good. It’s only our first game together, but the way we’re playing as a team, it’s a good sign.”
The second quarter saw Albany nearly double the Monarchs’ scoring output 30-16, leading to a 67-41 halftime total. The second quarter run helped propel Albany to a strong and permanent lead. “That second quarter really set the tone for us,” said Coach Brown after the game. “We did a great job. We played with great energy that was contagious; it rubbed off on everyone.”
Mosby joined six other Patroons in double-figure scoring, including Jared Sam (20 pts), Trevis Wyche (18), Mike Williams (12 pts, 10 rebounds), and JC Show (16). Victor Nicholson’s 12 points included two rim-rocking dunks, one on an alley-oop; the other on a two-handed slam.
